Time Studies

Time Studies look at our attitudes toward time and how this impacts how we see the world, how we make decisions, what we do, and our sense of well being.

Having enough time is one of the most common obstacles in creating the good life. By becoming more conscious of our attitudes and assumptions, we can learn to have more control over our own time. We can also apply this awareness to others which can be helpful in understanding (and where appropriate, helping to expand) the various time frameworks of the people with whom we live and work.

  • The Time Paradox: The New Psychology of Time That Will Change Your Life by Philip Zimbardo and John Boyd have studied attitudes towards time for 30 years and developed time profiles with associated behaviors. There is a short survey on the website for determining your orientation towards the past, the present and the future.
  • A Geography of Time: The Temporal Misadventures of a Social Psychologist, or How Every Culture Keeps Time Just a Little Bit Differently by Robert Levine looks at time throughout history and across cultures to uncover various embedded assumptions. Understanding time as a social construct can help us become more conscious of our own assumptions.
  • Take Back Your Time is an organization founded by the documentary director John De Graaf which addresses the issue of time deprivation of Americans from various angles including workplace policies.
